SENATOR BOURNE: How much water was there in your boat at that time? Was there still 8 inches, or had you any water in there at that time?
MR. CROWE: After we got some people out of our boat and returned to the wreck we did not take in so much water, because we bailed a certain amount of water out and no more seemed to come in.
SENATOR BOURNE: Then you infer that the strain was among the upper timbers, near the gunwale?
MR. CROWE: Yes, sir; I think, the boat being new, the wood had warped sufficiently to not prevent the water from coming in. Then we returned alongside the Carpathia, and then we landed our people. That is the story, sir.
SENATOR BOURNE: You were in boat No. 14 when it was lowered?
MR. CROWE: Yes, sir.
SENATOR BOURNE: Was there any shooting that occurred at the time the boat was lowered?
MR. CROWE: Yes, sir.
SENATOR BOURNE: Explain to the committee what knowledge or information you have relative to that?
MR. CROWE: There were various men passengers, probably Italians or some foreign nationality other than English or American, who attempted to rush the boats. The officers threatened to shoot any man who put his foot into the boat. He fired the revolver, but either downward or upward, not shooting at any of the passengers at all and not injuring anybody. He fired perfectly clear, upward or downward.
SENATOR BOURNE: Did that stop the rush?
MR. CROWE: Yes, sir.
SENATOR BOURNE: There was no disorder after that?
MR. CROWE: No disorder. Well, one woman was crying, but that was all; no panic or anything in the boat. . . .
SENATOR BOURNE: Did you and boat No. 14, with those that were with you manning the boat, return to the wreck as soon as your passengers were shifted into the other boat?
MR. CROWE: Yes, sir; almost immediately. There might have been a lapse of 5 or 10 minutes, perhaps.
SENATOR BOURNE: For what reason was that lapse; for the purpose of shifting your passengers to the other boat so you could return to the wreckage?

LE SÉNATEUR BOURNE : Quelle quantité d’eau y avait-il dans votre canot à ce moment-là? Y avait-il encore 8 pouces d’eau, ou y en avait-il à ce moment-là?
M. CROWE : Après que nous ayons sorti certaines personnes de notre canot et que nous soyons retournés sur le lieu du naufrage, nous n’avons pas pris autant d’eau, parce que nous avons écopé d’une certaine quantité d’eau et qu’il ne semblait plus y en avoir.
LE SÉNATEUR BOURNE : Vous laissez donc entendre que la souche se trouvait dans le bois supérieur, près du plat-bord?
M. CROWE : Oui, monsieur; je pense que le bateau étant neuf, le bois était suffisamment déformé pour ne pas empêcher l’eau d’entrer. Puis nous sommes revenus aux côtés du Carpathia, et nous avons débarqué nos passagers. C’est l’histoire, monsieur.
LE SÉNATEUR BOURNE : Vous étiez dans le canot no 14 lorsqu’il a été abaissé?
M. CROWE : Oui, monsieur.
LE SÉNATEUR BOURNE : Y a-t-il eu des coups de feu au moment où le canot a été descendu?
M. CROWE : Oui, monsieur.
LE SÉNATEUR BOURNE : Expliquez au comité quelles connaissances ou informations vous avez à ce sujet?
M. CROWE : Il y avait divers passagers hommes, probablement des italiens ou des ressortissants étrangers autres que des anglais ou des américains, qui ont tenté de se précipiter les canots. Les officiers ont menacé de tirer sur n’importe quel homme qui mettrait son pied dans le canot. Il a tiré un coup de revolver, mais soit vers le bas ou vers le haut, ne tirant sur aucun des passagers du tout et ne blessant personne. Il a tiré très clairement vers le haut ou vers le bas.
LE SÉNATEUR BOURNE : Cela a-t-il mis fin à la ruée?
M. CROWE : Oui, monsieur.
LE SÉNATEUR BOURNE : Il n’y a pas eu de désordre après cela?
M. CROWE : Pas de désordre. Eh bien, une femme pleurait, mais c’était tout; pas de panique ou quoi que ce soit dans le canot [...]
LE SÉNATEUR BOURNE : Est-ce que vous et le canot no 14, avec ceux qui vous accompagnaient, êtes retournés sur le lieu du naufrage dès que vos passagers ont été déplacés dans l’autre canot?
M. CROWE : Oui, monsieur; presque immédiatement. Il y a peut-être eu une interruption de cinq ou dix minutes.
LE SÉNATEUR BOURNE : Pour quelle raison ce déai? Dans le but de transférer vos passagers à l’autre canot pour que vous puissiez retourner sur les lieux?
